my love handles have a story

Can I get really off-topic for a minute?  Kthanks.

I'm about 15 pounds overweight.  I have concluded this on my own without a medical or fitness education, so take it for what you want.  Even if it is more than that I don't know that I could be that honest with myself.

Source

I have worked pretty hard the past two or three years to lose weight.  Some months I worked a lot harder than others.  I never went on a really strict diet or a crazy exercise routine.  I did workout several times a week, we cleaned up some of our eating habits and I even trained for and ran a half marathon.  Unfortunately, I haven't seen much success.  I have lost a few pounds here or there, but inevitably I have gained them back.  And trust me, this is not a pity party; I'm simply giving you some context for where my head is at right now.

Do I want to be overweight?  No.  Am I willing to completely sacrifice or give up things that I enjoy that may not be very healthy just to shed a few pounds?  Probably not.  And you know what?  My love handles have a history.  A story all their own.  And as crazy as this sounds, I have earned those extra pounds.

College did a number on me, like most people I think.  In high school I played sports nearly year-round; sometimes the sports seasons would overlap one another.  Several weeks throughout the school year I would have double practices, spending four hours after school doing physical activity, 3-5 times a week.  So naturally, when you transition from that schedule to one consisting of hours in class, hours in studio and hours watching One Tree Hill reruns on Soapnet, I gained a few pounds.  I tried to be conscious of what I was doing to my body, but there is only so much you can do when getting through college is your only goal.  And when I say "getting through" I mean surviving without failing a class, completely running out of money or suffering a nervous breakdown.  I'm sure there was more I could have done; hindsight is always 20/20 as they say.  But I don't know that I would have done anything differently, given the chance to do it again.

Sure, I could have bought my own groceries and made fresh food in my dorm instead of going to the dining hall.  But then I would have missed out on unforgettable moments with my new college friends.  I would have never learned how to make "Derek's Mac 'n cheese" when nothing else looked appetizing.  I wouldn't have gotten to know the sweet old lady who swiped our meal cards.  I wouldn't have been able to hear the gossip from last night's shenanigans.

And yes, I could have not gone on so many "ice cream dates".  But I would have missed precious time with a new best friend.  A best friend that I would live hours away from in just three short years.  A friend that, five years after graduating college and moving back home, I can still say is my best friend.

Now, you could look at me and judge me - say I'm making excuses.  And that's fine.  You haven't heard my whole story.

Here is what you don't know: those extra pounds are my "battle wounds", if you will, from my three years at college.  Three years that is scheduled to be four years - but I was broke; I lived off of scholarships and money from being a Resident Advisor, and refused to get a student loan.  Three years that required me to spend every summer taking classes to graduate on time.  Three years away from my boyfriend (now husband) that were brutally painful for us at times.

You can't see, just by looking at me, that part of that weight comes from eating a sickening amount of ramen noodles.  There were times when I had no money to buy groceries and I literally ate ramen noodles four times a day.  And even when I did have some money for groceries, it was never much.  My college diet could pretty much be summed up with the following: processed food, dining hall food and fast food.  None of which are good for you or "healthy", but all are cheap and affordable when your monthly income is $80.

You also don't know that my lack of sleep probably assisted in my weight gain.  Sleep was optional more than it was required during college.  My third and final year in school, I went to sleep more often during daytime hours than nighttime hours.  The parking lot closest to the studio was only available to students until 7am.  I would stay up all night working and leave with just minutes to spare to narrowly miss a $25 parking ticket from Public Safety.  I would call my boyfriend and say goodnight to him when he was waking up to get ready for work.  My whole world was on a different schedule.

You weren't there the nights we actually made time to go out and let off a little steam.  We were so stressed out every single day that we were desperate for a little fun.  And you weren't there when my closest friends were turning 21.  When we were able to celebrate one of the most exciting birthdays in a person's life.  "The nights you won't remember with the friends you won't forget".   Nights I could not reschedule, nights I could never replace

So I will continue to work on myself, improving my fitness and physique.  And some days I will be really hard on myself, regretting the decisions that led me to where I am now.  But on those days I will have to remind myself that everything in life is give and take.  And if I had to take a little weight gain to have an unforgettable college experience, that is fine by me.  If earning a college degree without any student loans mean having a muffin top, that's okay.  If I had to go up a pant size in order to acquire lifelong friends, I'll take it.  That is a price worth paying in my book.

So cheers to those of us who have earned our extra pounds.  Whether it be because you had a rigorous college experience, grew a human (or two, or three...), struggle with sickness/disease, or maybe just haven't made super great choices 100% of the time, we all have our reasons.  Everybody has a story and every body has one too.  To those of you who are trying to be a better version of yourself, I toast to you with a giant glass of water in my hand (working on those 60oz!).  And to those of you who are perfectly content, extra pounds or not, I strive to be like you everyday.

cruisin'

My husband and I went on vacation with my parents a couple of weeks ago.

Have you ever noticed that the amount of work you put in before and after a vacation almost make it not worth it?  But let's be honest, it is still awesome to get away, even for just a few days.  Get away from the noise, the busy-ness, the work.  Ya, it is pretty great.

We went on a cruise to Florida and the Bahamas.  If you have never been on a cruise before, let me tell you, I think they are GREAT!  There are so many great things about cruising that I just don't feel like you get with many other vacation experiences.   *Disclaimer: I have never been to an all-inclusive resort, but I imagine it might be similar to the perks of a cruise.  I think one of my favorite things about being on a cruise is the great food that you don't have to prepare yourself!  Not only is the food delicious, the service is top-notch and dining is available nearly 24-hours.  (This is why people gain weight on cruises.)  I also really enjoy the entertainment that is offered on a cruise.  Between live music, dance, musicals, comedians, and orchestras, there is something for just about everyone.

Anyway... this is really starting to sound like a commercial.  Sorry about that :)

So onto my story about how, even in the year 2015, internet sleuthing is hard:

During our time on the ship we made two friends, Max and Susana, who worked for Hublot, a watch company.  Both Max and Susana were not technically ship crew members, but they did have to work some during the week.  We had the chance to hang out with them several evenings and had a great time getting to know them.  So naturally, when we returned to the land of wi-fi, we tried to find them on facebook to connect.  It turns out, if you don't know someone's last name and you literally don't know any other facts about them besides the company they work for, it is really hard to find someone!  We did find one random article about Susana on some watch fanatic forum, but that only gave us the first initial of her last name... So, our friendship with Max and Susana will have to be short lived, I suppose.  If we wanted to be really creepy and desperate we could make one of those posterboards with our story and post it to facebook and have it shared around the world... but we aren't really that desperate.  They were fun though!  That is another great thing about being on a cruise, it is easy to make friends because most everyone else on the ship doesn't know anyone either :)

Now we have to get back into the swing of things... who wants to come to our house and cook for us? ;)

missing in action

Hey gang!  How are you?  If by chance you have stopped by the blog to check in, I apologize for my lack of presence lately.  I have put in some crazy overtime hours the past five weeks which kept me from making great new content over here.

Needless to say, I've already busted my 2015 resolution of posting 4x a month... but that won't keep my from trying the rest of this year!  I have some ideas for new posts, so keep your eyes peeled for some great new stuff.

What have I been up to, besides living at the office, you ask?  Great question.  One weekend we spent the whole time doing laundry and chores because we (I) had neglected them.  Last weekend we went to see Disney on Ice: Frozen.  It was phenomenal.  And no, we don't have kids ;)  I'm just a big Disney geek and loved it almost as much as the adorable 2.5 year-old behind us.  For the record:  I did not wear an Elsa costume (they don't come in my size...).  I randomly stopped drinking coffee for three days, but don't worry, I got back on the bandwagon!  Oh ya, I've worked on collecting our tax documents, but haven't actually gotten around the submitting them. Pretty much I've been really on top of things and life and stuff...

Check back soon, and I promise to have some new posts for you!  Also, it has snowed a lot the past week or two, but I swear that Spring will be here soon-ish.  And that means lots of fun outside projects :)

Happy Tuesday!

2014 wrap up

Welllllll this post is only a week late.......

I want to do a quick recap of 2014!  Being my first year with the blog, I am still figuring out how and when to create content and what works well for me and for readers.  This post is a little reflection over the past few months on the blog, and what is coming up for this year.  Feel free to share your thoughts so I can make 2015 even better!

The top three posts (by views):

My three favorite posts:

I am really looking forward to having a whole year to blog.  There is half of a year of decorating and holidays I missed, plus there are so many things I haven't shared with you yet!

On a more sentimental note, it is a little bittersweet for me that 2014 is over.  It wasn't until I really thought about it (it is so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and miss a big picture view) but last year was a great year for us.  Most things were, "status quo" and I think that is what I loved about it.  2012 was the "year of change", we bought our first house, moved in together and got married.  2013 I think we were still recovering from the wedding at the beginning of the year, I opened my Etsy shop over the summer and my husband got a new job in December.  2014 was, just, nice.  I mean, don't get me wrong, things "happened" (ran my first half marathon, got two cats) but it all seemed pretty normal for the most part.  I think what is most bittersweet for me is this: my Mom was diagnosed with stage four cancer (colon that spread to her liver and lymphnodes) last spring.  It was truly a miracle that the doctors even found it and we are so thankful for that.  What is bittersweet is that last Christmas could be the last one we spend with our mom.  Her birthday last August could be the last time we get to sing to her.  The doctors gave her six months to two years, depending on how she responds to treatment.  I know, you can't put a timeline on these kinds of things... but still.  We have to live in reality while also trying to stay positive.  My sister is getting married this year (sooooo excited!!!), but needless to say we all have one thing in the back of our minds...

So 2015 will be another interesting year for us.  We will stay busy with the usual house/work/life stuff, and of course with helping my sister plan her wedding.  I am just thankful to have another year to spend with my husband and our little fur family, another year having a job I love, and another year to make my side-businesses more successful!

These are a few of the goals for the blog and posts I hope to achieve during this year:
  • get more activity on the blog's Pinterest board
  • paint the dresser in our kitchen and live to tell you about it
  • reorganize our office (this might take me the entire year).  Still debating on whether I will show you "before" photos, because you might judge me
  • post once a week, or four times a month (at least)
  • a "year of mantles" post
  • more DIY and decor posts

What was your favorite post from 2014?  What would you like to see on the blog this year?  I would love to hear your ideas :)

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.
Because if you are making mistakes then you are making new things, trying new things,
learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world.
You're doing things you've never done before,
and more importantly, you're doing something.

Happy New Year!!

December 22, 2014

this is why we can't have nice things

We changed the sheets today.  Big accomplishment, right?  Let me rewind......

We have two dogs, pitbulls to be exact,  85 lbs and 45 lbs.  They are basically our children (for now, maybe someday we will have actual children without tails), and yes, they sleep in our bed.  Sometimes even under the blankets.  We aren't freaks or anything, we just love our dogs, a lot.

Ok - earlier this year (March maybe?) the dogs were playing on the bed and tore the comforter.  I was pretty disappointed; we had gotten the comforter as a wedding gift (had been married 1.5 years at that time) and I really loved it.  So I got onto Target's website to see if they happened to still carry it.  Lucky for me, they did!  We ordered a new one (king size for our queen size bed, someone *me* hogs the blankets), but when it came in the mail my husband decided to just leave it in the box because soon we wouldn't need the comforter anymore (it would be too warm).  So there it sat, in our office/storage room until today.

Ok - another (similar) story.  A week or so ago, the dogs were playing on the bed and ripped a giant tear in the fitted sheet (exactly where I sleep, if you were wondering).  When I say giant, I mean I would wake up and my entire arm would be stuck in between the fitted sheet and the mattress because I had gotten it stuck in the torn fabric.  We have another set of sheets but I just hadn't gotten around to changing them out (too busy getting my Christmas home tour ready).  Yesterday we were at Costco and they had some sheets that were almost the exact color of said torn sheets, so we bought them.

Side bar: this story is soooo interesting, I'm sure your dying to hear the end of it!

My husband is off work for the remainder of the year, so I asked him to wash the new sheets and new/old comforter while I was at work so we could change out the bedding and everything would be fresh and new and clean and happy.  So we did all the swapping this evening.  We had even bought two new pillows yesterday so we busted those out of the package as well.  Exciting stuff, really.  While I am straightening out the comforter, my husband lets the dogs in from outside and Diesel runs in and immediately jumps on the bed.

This is what happens:

MUD.  Everywhere!  He is covering up half of the paw prints.  You can visibly see at least five, but trust me, there are more.  He is looking quite guilty and pitiful, isn't he?

Truly, this is why we can't have nice things

I already told you about how my cats were trying to ruin Christmas.  And now this!  I'm not even mad though.  It will come out in the washer.

And you know what?  I wouldn't have it any other way.  I would rather buy new bedding every 1.5 years and have our pups sleep with us.  And if you think I'm crazy, well that's okay :)

*Disclaimer:  this post was supposed to be explaining how even people who blog about their house have messes too, but it ended up being about how much I love the dogs.  Maybe I am a little crazy............

beautiful savannah

This post has nothing to do with our house... just a quick update from me!

My husband and I went on vacation last week to Savannah, Georgia.  If Savannah were a person, she would be a beautiful, breathtaking, down-to-earth lady who loves to eat!

We had such a great time, I wish we could have stayed longer.  We will definitely be visiting again!  There were many places we didn't get to (read: food we didn't eat) so we just have to go back :)

Check out some of the photos I took during our visit...

Side note: photography is a recent hobby of mine.  I am very much an amateur, but it is fun for me.  My husband also took up a hobby when I started taking a lot of photos, it is called finding the nearest bench and waiting for "Photo Phil" to be finished taking pictures.

River Street

I just loved all of the moss hanging from the trees!

Old stairs so dangerous they have signs saying use them "at your own risk"

This entire month has been a little crazy for us.  My husband traveled out of the country for work the week before vacation.  He unpacked, repacked, and we drove to Savannah.  We got home late Friday evening and spent the entire weekend doing yard work.  This week we will be getting ready for our annual Halloween party!  (Look for a post soon with details about the decorations and food).  So be on the lookout for some new posts coming in November, including a post about homemade applesauce.  And just think, Christmas will be here before you know it!!

July 22, 2014

well hello there

Welcome!

This is my second attempt at a blog... once upon a time in college I took a graphic design course. We had to make a blog and we were required to post a certain number of times throughout the semester... then I "revived" the blog approximately once a year for two or three years. I think there is something like 12 posts in the history of that blog. And approximately zero readers... I never felt like it really had an identity. First it was a blog focused on the graphic design projects I was doing. Then I switched the focus to interior design (since that is my profession and what my degree is in). Then I got married, so the name of the blog changed. The poor thing just couldn't catch a break.

So now, I've started fresh, and with a new direction.

Can I just tell you how much I love Pinterest? (find me here) Whenever I am browsing my feed and following links to blogs, I am always a little envious of those girls with the beautiful blogs. You know the ones I'm talking about... Somehow they have beautiful hair and skin, great fashion sense, amazing home, fluffy pet, dimples. Sound familiar? Well let me just tell you now, that's not me. I mean, I have good hair days, and bad hair days. My hair is naturally curly/wavy/kinky/frizzy. I live in Missouri, which means it is humid approximately 80% of the year. Humidity + curly hair = not so great hair days. Also, my dogs are not fluffy. I have two sweet pitbulls that I love dearly. Also, I have recently gotten two cats. I'll have to tell you that story later... anyway. And I was not the lucky girl with beautiful skin. My complexion isn't great, and I don't tan. (Although when I'm 50 maybe I won't look like a leather bag?) The point of this rambling is: I want to try to have one of those blogs some other girl is jealous of. I realize this will take work, and time, and more work. And probably more time. But, one day, maybe I will be there. I hope you will follow along on my journey...

What is this journey exactly?

My husband and I bought our first house in January of 2012. We have been homeowners for about two and a half years. As an interior designer, the thought of designing your own home is so exciting. You can do whatever you want!

Then, I quickly realized that designing your own home costs money. And it takes a lot of time. So two and a half years later, we have made a lot of progress. But we still have a lot of work left to do.

Did I mention our house is small? 1075 square feet. No basement.

Now, for those of you who are not from the Midwest, or live in awesome lofty apartments in Chicago or New York, this might seem generous. But let me tell you, to find a house in St. Louis, Missouri that doesn't have a basement is just plain strange. When our realtor told us there was no basement, I thought he was kidding. I mean, where do I put my Christmas tree? Where I do take cover when the tornado is coming? Where do I put all of my junk??

It might sound like I'm complaining. And sometimes, I really hate that we don't have a basement (again with the Christmas tree...). But mostly, I love our house. It is small and simple. It's nothing to "write home about". But it is ours, and that is what I love most about it.

So, this journey will consist of decorating ideas, DIY tutorials, photo tours, seasonal decorations, crafty items, and anything else that might spark my interest (and yours, I hope). We have a garden in our backyard. We love our pets. And I also have an Etsy shop. So, this adventure may veer off course a time or two, but if you hang in there, I promise it will be fun!

For now, I will leave you with pictures of our sweet pups... because let's face it, everyone likes dog pics ;)  thanks for reading, and I hope you will stop by again soon.
